Mark 6: 22 and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.” (NASB).
My mouth has gotten me into difficulty many times in the past. Have you ever done the same? I tend to say yes to too many things, to the point that I get in trouble for not being able to fulfill my promises. On other occasions, I have responded in a bad manner to someone who I thought was being rude, but it turned out they were joking.
Herod, being an evil person, let himself be carried away by his emotions. He never thought that this girl would ask for such a thing as John the Baptist’s head. The girl didn’t know what to ask; however, she was influenced by her mother to ask for the prophet’s head. The lessons I take from this Biblical story are: Don’t promise anything when you don’t have control over your emotions. Be aware of who is influencing those who ask for promises from you. And finally, don’t make promises in order to impress someone. Make sure God would approve of that promise. Think on these things when making a promise. If we do that, we won’t have to worry about getting in trouble.
