“He Paid A Debt”

He paid a debt He did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay,
I needed someone to wash my sins away.
And now I sing a brand new song: Amazing Grace (all day long)
Christ Jesus Paid the debt that I could never pay.

I know this beloved American Folk Hymn is using poetic license, but the truth of the matter is that He made payment for all sins. And, I have much more than “a” debt, I have debts too numerous to count.

My debts include the sins which so easily beset me. They seem to be constantly with me as I struggle to overcome them.

My debts are also the sins which I commit in my ignorance. I am unaware of them until I come to a better knowledge of what God would have me to do. Some are things I’m not aware I have done, but when I become aware of them, I know immediately I should not have done them.

I’m indebted beyond my ability to comprehend and certainly beyond my ability to pay, but I have hope, because Christ Jesus paid the debt I could never pay.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NIV)
