Tearing Down Idols

During the Pre-Teen devo this past month we discussed idols we can place in our hearts. God was constantly warning the Israelites about the idols they chased after with the foreign people of the land. The people started by creating the golden calf after God delivered them from Egypt. Over time they continued returning to Baal over and over again even sacrificing their children to the false god. Despite God’s promises and warnings they continued to place those idols over worshiping the one true God and King.
God is very clear in speaking to his people (them and us) by saying “Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the Lord your God.” (Lev. 19:4) and “They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols.” (Duet 32:21)
We see God is jealous for us. He wants our undivided attention and service to Him. He knows what is best for our life. That’s why Jesus says the greatest command is “The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
So many things can take God’s place in your heart and become your idol without you realizing what’s happening. Phones, tablets, sports, school, apparel, money and pride are just a few examples of what can be an idol today. God views those things the same way He viewed the idols in the Old Testament.
God is jealous for YOU! He wants you to be with Him forever. So much that he sent Jesus to die for your sins to make this relationship possible. Test yourself today for the idols in your heart, tear them down like God commanded the Israelites and serve Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength!
